主讲人简介
Adam Jaworski is Chair Professor of Sociolinguistics at the School of English, and Associate Dean (Research) at the Faculty of Arts, The University of Hong Kong. Previously he worked at universities in Poland and the UK. His research interests include language and globalisation, media discourse, display of language in public space and text based art. His latest book is The Elite Discourse: The Rhetorics of Status, Privilege and Power (co-edited with Crispin Thurlow, Routledge, 2018). With Brook Bolander he co-edits the Oxford University Press book series, Oxford Studies in Sociolinguistics.
讲座内容
Drawing on his earlier work on tourism discourse and the ‘sociolinguistics of fleeting relationships’ (Jaworski and Thurlow, 2010), this talk examines transactional, one-off interactions between tourists and hosts and their underpinning ideologies. Tourists and hosts typically interact in the context of service encounters, where part of the linguistic interaction between them becomes a commodity consumed by the tourist (Heller, Jaworski and Thurlow, 2014). After a brief introduction to the notions of ‘repertoire’ (Blommaert and Backus, 2013), ‘commodification of language’ (Heller, 2010), ‘conviviality’ (Gilroy, 2005; Williams and Stroud, 2013) and ‘performance’ (Bauman, 1975), He will analyze two YouTube video clips in search of the discursive reflexes of these key terms and possible tensions between them. He will conclude by discussing the implications of tourist discourse for theorizing of face-to-face interactions under globalization.
